Behind every goal, STEM powers U.S. Soccer’s success

IF/THEN® teamed up with U.S. Soccer to support their commitment to level the playing field and get more women into full-time roles. The partnership sends a powerful message to youth: there are many ways to be part of the action that may or may not involve scoring goals. STEM plays a crucial role in building world-class players, from sports medicine and science to data and performance analysis. These innovators directly impact U.S. Soccer’s ability to support and develop players within the U.S. National Team program. For the past 8 years, AAAS IF/THEN® Ambassador Dr. Monica Rho has been traveling the world as the lead team physician for the U.S. Women’s Soccer National Team. She was part of the staff who directly supported the players who brought home the gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Celebrating STEM superstars in a magazine spread

Marie Claire magazine is known for its chic style, bold stories, and its celebration of women’s diverse, vibrant lives. From fashion and beauty to career tips and cultural deep dives, it connects with confident, powerful women across the globe. 

So, it’s no surprise that in 2020, the magazine spotlighted 24 incredible STEM innovators and entrepreneurs in two multipage spreads for their @WORK NEXTGEN STEM feature—and 18 of them were trailblazing AAAS IF/THEN® Ambassadors! The features captured the professional poise of these inspiring women combined with snippets of their journeys, passions, and dreams. Each woman shared her personal take on the IF/THEN® mantra, like US Women’s Soccer Coach Dawn Scott’s “IF you have a dream, THEN chase it,” and astrophysicist Burçin Mutlu-Pakdil’s “IF one door is locked, THEN try another until you find a way.”

Geena Davis Institute for Gender in Media

Breaking down gender bias in media

Founded by two-time Academy Award-winning Geena Davis, for over 20 years, the Geena Davis Institute has been at the forefront of championing equitable representation in global entertainment media. GDI’s mission is centered on reinventing, transforming and inspiring how global entertainment media tell stories through authentic portrayals of the population in entertainment. Through our ground-breaking research, we understand the life-changing impact of onscreen representation, and have devoted ourselves to pioneering new pathways within entertainment and media.

In 2018, they launched a groundbreaking research study, Portray Her: Representations of Women STEM Characters in Media, which analyzed over a decade of media content to explore how STEM roles for women are depicted—and how these portrayals influence girls’ views of STEM careers. The study demonstrated how powerful entertainment media is in shaping dreams and careers, and why we need to see more women and girls in those roles! Following the first study, Portray Her 2.0, expanded on five more years of progress and identified areas for improvement in STEM on-screen. With the latest findings, it’s clear: despite 71% of young women wanting to see more women in STEM roles, the number of women STEM characters still lags behind. And, the studies also provide insightful toolkits for content creators to make that change happen by creating more authentic women STEM characters in entertainment media.

Teen Vogue Annual Summit

Mentoring future changemakers at the Teen Vogue Summit

For two years in a row, Lyda Hill Philanthropies sponsored the Teen Vogue Summit.  While the summit featured the classic keynote talks and engaging panel discussions, it also offered something extra special—Career Meetups! These unique sessions created a space for attendees to connect and chat, guided by trailblazing founders and business leaders. One of those leaders, AAAS IF/THEN® Ambassador Shyla Raghav, is a rockstar in the fight against climate change. As one of the few women of color—and one of the youngest—leading the charge on climate action in the U.S., Shyla embodied IF/THEN®’s mission to inspire the next generation. She effortlessly led mentorship breakout sessions, empowering young women to dream big!

The Ad Council – #SheCanSTEM

Showing girls that "If She Can STEM, So Can You"

In 2018, the Ad Council, with support from IF/THEN®, launched the multiyear #SheCanSTEM campaign to give visibility to women in the world of STEM and reinforce that STEM is cool, creative, and inspiring. #SheCanSTEM showed girls that they can have a future in STEM by sharing the stories of today’s most daring, accomplished STEM stars in PSAs, on social media and on billboards. To complement their eye-catching campaign, they developed educational resources to get girls started on their own STEM journey. After three years, more than half of girls surveyed between 11 and 14 years old were aware of at least one of the #SheCanSTEM campaign ads. If “She Can STEM, So Can You.”
