Redefining what a STEM job looks like

TV, Film, Media

Rooted in a simple truth: seeing is believing.

How women in STEM are shown in media has major power to change the game. By ditching old-school stereotypes and creating fresh, inclusive stories, we can unlock the full potential of diverse talent in science and innovation. That’s why we’re using media to (1) spotlight how STEM shapes the world, (2) amplify women STEM role models, and (3) make STEM careers more visible and relatable.

Girls deserve to see women who look like them and share their experiences rocking the STEM world—whether it's on their favorite shows or scrolling through social media. That’s why IF/THEN is teaming up with Hello Sunshine and renewed a 6th season of Mission Unstoppable.

  • Now in its 6th season, hosted by Miranda Cosgrove, this Emmy-nominated #1 STEM show on CBS takes young viewers on an exciting journey with women who are changing the world as astronauts, engineers, codebreakers, oceanographers, and more. With more than 1 million followers on social, the franchise has become a powerhouse, connecting with fans on CBS, Amazon Prime Video, Paramount+, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and Twitch.

  • IF/THEN® and Hello Sunshine, a part of Candle Media, are developing and producing storytelling centered around women and girls in STEM. Announced in 2025, the partners will invest in a slate of scripted and unscripted film and TV series that showcase the power of women in STEM and the obvious and not-so-obvious ways that STEM is everywhere.

The Ad Council – Super Bowl Ad

Impact

TODAY anchors star in STEM-focused PSA

There is no better way to send a STEM message to a broad audience than with a Super Bowl Sunday ad! In the PSA, the anchors from TODAY take a trip back in time, imagining themselves as students in the ’70s and thinking about their future careers—specifically, STEM!

Created by Deloitte Digital and the Ad Council in collaboration with Lyda Hill Philanthropies, the commercial aired during Super Bowl Sunday 2022 and was also featured in two TODAY segments. Savannah Guthrie and her fellow anchors, Hoda Kotb, Al Roker, Craig Melvin, and Carson Daly, explore cool careers that didn’t even exist in the ’70s but are totally a thing today. The PSA also shines a light on real-life role models (and IF/THEN® Ambassadors) Tiffany Kelly, Mitu Khandaker, and Karina Popovich.

Project Runway

STEM on the Runway

The prevalence of STEM careers in the fashion industry may not be familiar to the casual observer, but highlight their role on a popular primetime television show produced by a supermodel and viewers are likely to see the connection and the career possibilities.  That’s exactly what IF/THEN® did with producer Heidi Klum when it took over an episode of Project Runway in 2019.

The role of innovation and technology has grown in fashion design and designers are increasingly tasked with incorporating advanced technologies like 3D printing, CAD software, and sustainable materials in their creations.  Collaboration with STEM professionals meant exploring the intersection of fashion with fields such as engineering and environmental science, and showcasing how modern designers must balance creativity with technical skill in a rapidly evolving industry.
