Katie Mae McConnell, MS

Haiku, Hawaii

“There’s so much science in surfing - STEM is in it all.”

Riding giant waves and protecting the ocean! Katie McConnell is a champion big-wave surfer and marine biologist who competes at some of the world’s largest surf breaks—from Jaws to Nazaré. A National Geographic Explorer, she has dived beneath Antarctic ice, explored coral reefs and kelp forests, and created films that raise awareness about climate change and ocean conservation. In a sport long dominated by men, Katie is also helping expand opportunity and visibility for women in big-wave surfing. By blending science, adventure, and advocacy, she proves you can chase massive waves—and create massive change.
